Research Software & Data Engineer

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking a Research Software and Data Engineer to join its Research Computing team. In this role you will collaborate with faculty and researchers to build secure, reproducible software and data solutions that accelerate scientific discovery.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain research‑focused software and data workflows in compliance with security and reproducibility standards.
• Consult with researchers across disciplines to understand requirements and propose tailored technical solutions.
• Automate cloud account provisioning and adapt existing research pipelines to cloud environments.
• Deliver training workshops and promote best practices in project management for research software.
• Provide technical expertise to university‑wide teams, helping users navigate available tools and services.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
• Three to five years of professional experience in software and data engineering.
• Demonstrated ability to work on short‑ and long‑term research projects and to communicate effectively with academic stakeholders.

Required skills

• Experience with cloud computing environments and automation of cloud resources.
