Research Scientist – Performance Materials

About the role

The Performance Materials division at BASF is seeking a Research Scientist to join its Transportation, Furniture, CASE and Footwear technical development team in Wyandotte, Michigan. You will lead R&D projects focused on polyurethane formulations, driving innovation for sustainable plastics used in multiple industries.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, design and execute research experiments to develop new polyurethane formulations.
• Conduct material testing and define processing parameters to meet performance targets.
• Collaborate with marketing, sales, production and external partners such as customers, suppliers and universities.
• Provide technical guidance to a laboratory technician and ensure a safe, compliant work environment.
• Document results, protect intellectual property through patent filings and communicate findings to stakeholders.

Required profile

• Self‑starter with strong motivation and enthusiasm for R&D.
• Ability to lead projects independently and work effectively in cross‑functional teams.
• Excellent communication skills for reporting results and presenting ideas.
