Research Manager – AI Safety

About the role
We are looking for a Research Manager to support our AI safety fellows at the Cambridge Boston Alignment Initiative. You will work closely with fellows and their mentors to facilitate cutting‑edge research on interpretability, AI control, formal verification, evaluations, and AI governance.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct regular 1‑1 meetings with fellows, providing feedback, troubleshooting research challenges, and guiding methodology development.
- Connect fellows with relevant literature, tools, and external opportunities to enhance their projects.
- Coordinate with mentors to define clear research objectives and track progress.
- Participate in the fellow selection process by reviewing applications and interviewing candidates.
- Design reading‑group curricula and workshop programs for the fellowship cycles.
- Curate a speaker‑event series aligned with fellows’ interests and recent research breakthroughs.
- Support special projects such as evaluation frameworks or mentor onboarding.
- Meet weekly with program leadership to improve feedback loops and overall program effectiveness.
- Stay up‑to‑date on AI alignment and governance developments and prepare weekly briefs for fellows.
Required profile
- Proven experience supporting complex intellectual work through teaching, team management, consulting, or academic coordination.
- Deep understanding of the research process, able to assess research plans and identify blockers.
- Skilled at giving developmental feedback that strengthens arguments, methodology, and presentation.
- Excellent communicator with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a servant‑leadership mindset.
- Mission‑motivated and aligned with AI safety and AGI risk reduction.
- Highly organized, conscientious, and able to keep multi‑project timelines on track.
- Curious, adaptable, and eager to learn about diverse research agendas.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Public Policy) with demonstrated research experience.
What we offer
- Competitive salary ranging from $100,000 to $145,000 per year, with flexibility for exceptional candidates.
- 5 % 403(b) match contribution.
