Research Economist – AI Economic Impact

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Research Economist to lead the measurement and analysis of AI’s influence on the global economy. You will help shape the Anthropic Economic Index and provide evidence‑based insights that guide both internal product decisions and external policy discussions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and expand the Anthropic Economic Index, producing quarterly reports and industry‑specific deep dives.
• Design and execute empirical research on AI’s economic effects using external data and Anthropic’s privacy‑preserving measurement system.
• Create new methodological approaches to study AI’s impact on labor markets, productivity, economic inequality, industry disruption, and aggregate macro‑economic trajectories.
• Build causal‑inference tools such as surrogate indexes and heterogeneous‑effect pipelines to evaluate downstream consequences of Anthropic’s compute, product, and pricing choices.
• Maintain relationships with academic institutions, think tanks, and research partners.
• Collaborate with technical teams to improve measurement infrastructure and data collection.
• Translate research findings into actionable recommendations for product strategy and policy engagement.
• Disseminate results through publications, policy briefs, and presentations to diverse stakeholders.

Required profile

• PhD in Economics.
• Strong track record of empirical research that combines novel data sources with economic theory.
• Experience applying frontier methods in causal inference and machine learning to economic questions.
• Demonstrated ability to work with large, privacy‑preserving datasets.
