Reactor Facilities Laboratory Manager

About the role

The Reactor Facilities Laboratory Manager oversees the technical operations, infrastructure, and support functions of the Nuclear Engineering and Science Center’s reactor facilities. This hands‑on leadership role ensures preventive maintenance, safety compliance, and continuous improvement of laboratory and shop activities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and improve the preventive maintenance program for reactor systems, shop equipment, and laboratory apparatus.
• Plan, coordinate, and supervise facility repair, upgrade, and infrastructure projects with internal units and external contractors.
• Supervise technical staff and student workers, manage laboratory housekeeping, and schedule workload to support research and instructional programs.
• Serve as the primary interface with university safety organizations, ensuring compliance with federal nuclear regulations and maintaining accurate records.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• At least seven years of relevant experience, including a minimum of two years in a supervisory role.

Required skills

• Mechanical fabrication skills (lathe, milling machine, drill press, welding equipment).
• Operation of material‑handling equipment such as forklifts and cranes.
• Knowledge of electrical systems, including 480‑volt three‑phase equipment and control contactors.
• Basic project‑management principles and ability to develop scopes, schedules, and cost estimates.
• Proficiency with word‑processing and spreadsheet applications.
