Principal R&D Engineer – Balloon Technology

About the role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Principal R&D Engineer to lead balloon technology development for Shockwave Medical’s intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) portfolio. The role involves driving product innovation from concept through commercialization for peripheral, coronary and heart valve applications.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and manage cross‑functional technology development teams.
• Design and develop balloon‑based medical devices in compliance with design control and regulatory requirements.
• Survey emerging balloon and polymer technologies and translate them into product concepts.
• Prototype, test and validate new balloon designs, materials and processing methods.
• Collaborate with clinical advisors and key opinion leaders to align designs with clinical needs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science or related field with 10 years in medical devices (or Master’s with 8 years).
• At least 3 years of polymer product development experience, including balloon blow molding.
• Proven track record in technology development, project leadership and cross‑functional team management.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
