Principal Electrical Engineer – Traction Power

About the role

Parsons is seeking a Lead Traction Power Engineer to design and deliver electrical systems for rail and transit infrastructure, including traction power substations, duct banks, and ground grids for commuter rail, high‑capacity mass transit, and light rail projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design of traction power substation enclosures, site plans, duct banks, and ground grids.
• Create and modify specifications, substation plans, single‑line diagrams, schematics, and conduit/wire schedules.
• Utilize CAE/CAD tools, primarily Microstation with 3‑D modeling, for design work.
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations, providing professional engineer seal when required.
• Prepare material/equipment specifications, review supplier data, and witness shop tests.
• Develop operation and maintenance plans, standard operating procedures, and O&M manuals.
• Conduct surveys, site investigations, and coordinate with power companies to mitigate power leakage.
• Maintain affiliation with professional societies (IEEE, APTA, etc.) and stay current on industry standards.

Required profile

• 4‑year degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 10‑15 years of relevant experience in rail or transit electrical design.
• Engineer in Training with intent to obtain, or already holding, a Professional Engineer license.

Required skills

• DC traction power system design.
• Transformer substation and medium‑to‑low voltage design.
• Low‑voltage (480 V) motor control center and UPS design.
• AC traction power design (optional).
• Shop drawing review and design submittal evaluation.
• Testing procedures for electrical equipment and cables.
• Inspections of electrical systems in stations and structures.
• Microstation 3‑D modeling and CAE/CAD applications.
