Precision Controls Engineer – Specialist

About the role

As a Manufacturing Technology Precision Controls Engineer at 3M, you will design and deliver ultra‑precision manufacturing systems where motion performance is measured in nanometers. You will work alongside innovative engineers worldwide to solve complex manufacturing challenges through advanced control theory and hands‑on equipment deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, deploy, and support advanced control solutions for ultra‑precision manufacturing systems.
• Identify, quantify, and mitigate sources of positioning error affecting machine accuracy and repeatability.
• Create and implement strategies for error compensation, motion optimization, servo tuning, and system validation.
• Translate application requirements into robust control architectures, specifications, and performance targets.
• Manage technical requirements, cost estimates, schedules, and project deliverables for capital equipment projects.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, and process engineering teams to design high‑performance automation systems.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physical Science (required before start).
• Six (6) years of experience in mechatronics, precision engineering, industrial automation, motion control, or robotics within a private, public, government, or military environment.
• Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering discipline is a plus.
