Precision Controls Engineer (Manufacturing Technology)

About the role

Join 3M as a Precision Controls Engineer and work on ultra‑precision manufacturing systems where performance is measured in nanometers. You will collaborate with global experts to develop, deploy and support advanced control solutions that enable cutting‑edge production.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and support production‑ready control solutions for ultra‑precision equipment.
• Identify, quantify and mitigate sources of positioning error to meet stringent application requirements.
• Manage project requirements, provide cost and schedule estimates, and apply sound project‑management practices for capital equipment delivery.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate motion‑control hardware and embedded software.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Physical Science (completed before start).
• Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferred.
• At least five years of experience designing or deploying advanced motion‑control systems for manufacturing.
• Experience with precision‑engineering concepts such as error budgeting, ultra‑precision metrology and error compensation.

Required skills

• Linear motors, high‑resolution encoders, ultra‑low friction bearing systems, high‑speed servo control.
• CNC and advanced motion‑control platforms (DeltaTau, Newport, Physik Instrumente, Polaris, Aerotech).
• Electrical system design & documentation (ePlan, AutoCAD Electrical).
• Embedded software development (C/C++.NET C#, Structured Text, TwinCAT, LabVIEW).
