About the role
The Political Affairs Officer leads the Guidance and Learning Unit within the Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). This senior position shapes knowledge‑management systems, develops policies and training, and supports Special Political Missions worldwide.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and supervise all activities of the Guidance and Learning Unit, ensuring timely delivery of guidance, training and knowledge‑management products.
- Develop, review and promote DPPA policies, guidance notes and training programmes in coordination with the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs – External Relations (DPO/DPET).
- Manage the department’s knowledge‑management system, conduct lessons‑learning exercises and after‑action reviews with regional divisions and Special Political Missions.
- Prepare analytical reports, background papers, talking points and speeches for senior UN officials on high‑profile issues such as UN mission transitions and integration.
- Represent DPPA at inter‑agency fora, maintain contacts with other UN entities, international organisations and governments, and provide briefings and recommendations.
- Collaborate with other units in the division, contribute to staff planning, budgeting and overall division management.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration or a related field.
- Minimum seven years of relevant experience in political affairs, peace and security, knowledge management or guidance development, preferably within the UN system.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high‑quality analytical documents and to work collaboratively with diverse UN and external partners.
- Strong professionalism, teamwork, planning, judgment and decision‑making competencies as outlined in the UN competency framework.
