Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The Political Affairs Officer will be based in the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in New York, supporting the Policy, Advocacy and Donor Relations and Outreach Section. The role contributes to the development and implementation of mine‑action policies, providing analysis and coordination across UN bodies, governments and NGOs.

Key responsibilities

• Gather, select and analyse information from communications, publications and the press related to political issues affecting mine action.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of political developments and trends in the mine‑action sector.
• Monitor national and regional developments and advise field missions and UN agencies on the ground.
• Provide technical and substantive backup for the implementation of mine‑action mandates.
• Maintain contacts with UN sectors, international organisations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
• Track actions of intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, governments and NGOs in the mine‑action field.
• Classify and store mine‑action information in computerised databases.
• Participate in fact‑finding missions and provide secretariat services for the Inter‑Agency Coordination Group for Mine Action.
• Prepare meetings for senior UN officials with counterpart officials.
• Collect and analyse data, producing visual reports to support planning and decision‑making.

Required profile

• Professionalism with the ability to deliver substantive analysis of mine‑action policy matters, especially those linked to UN legislative mandates.
• Strong knowledge of political issues that impact mine action and the ability to translate this knowledge into actionable advice.
• Experience in coordinating with multiple UN entities, governments and NGOs.
