Pipefitter - Facilities (Antarctica)

About the role

Amentum is hiring a seasonal contract Pipefitter to support the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The pipefitter performs maintenance or construction welding tasks, alone or in combination, under the supervision of the Plumbing Foreman, with tasking based on prior experience and ASC schedule needs.

Key responsibilities

• Perform pipe welding and general welding on maintenance and construction projects, and cut, fit, connect and install piping
• Weld various types and sizes of piping and respond promptly to emergency service calls inside and outside normal hours
• Document hours worked, tasking, materials and processes accurately, and advise the supervisor on progress and material and labour needs
• Follow job plans, schematics, blueprints, vendor manuals and specifications, and follow SOPs while suggesting improvements
• Work outdoors in windy, extremely cold conditions and in remote research support facilities (McMurdo only)
• Use computer-based labour, material and maintenance tracking applications, and help other trades and departments
• Comply with ASC environmental, safety, health, waste management and quality assurance requirements, and take part in community programmes such as house-mouse, daisy-picking and recycling

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least 4 years' experience in pipe fitting and pipe welding
• 6G welding certification at hire, with a passing 6G exam before deployment
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and US citizenship
• Valid US driver's licence; able to lift and work in extreme cold

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications and diagrams
• Experience constructing or maintaining commercial and industrial facilities
• Computer experience and willingness to learn labour, inventory and maintenance tracking software
• Prior cold weather welding experience preferred
