About the role
The Pastoral Care Fellow provides spiritual and pastoral support to patients, families, and surrogates at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Working under the department director and an ACPE‑certified supervisor, the Fellow integrates Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives, Ignatian values such as cura personalis, and MedStar SPIRIT principles into daily care.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver individualized spiritual care to patients and their families throughout the hospital stay.
- Collaborate with clinical teams to address ethical, religious, and emotional concerns.
- Maintain documentation in accordance with ACPE standards and hospital policies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and contribute to the department’s pastoral education program.
Required profile
- Graduate‑level education in theology or a related field leading to a master’s degree (or completed).
- At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education completed at an ACPE‑accredited program.
- Commitment to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care and Ignatian identity.
Required skills
- Understanding of Catholic health‑care ethics and Ignatian spirituality.
- Ability to provide compassionate spiritual counseling in a clinical setting.
- Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff.
