Outside Machinist Specialist

About the role

The Outside Machinist Specialist is an expert‑level authority responsible for the most complex, high‑precision mechanical operations, alignments, system diagnostics and NAVSEA‑quality inspections on mission‑critical shipboard equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform high‑precision mechanical operations, alignments, system diagnostics and NAVSEA‑quality inspections on propulsion plants, steering gear, torpedo tubes and other essential shipboard systems.
• Mentor and certify machinists of all levels, coordinate with engineering, quality assurance and project management, and ensure all documentation and testing meet strict compliance standards.

Required profile

• 10–15+ years of advanced mechanical/machinist experience on complex shipboard systems, with NAVSEA/SUBSAFE certifications.
• U.S. citizenship, ability to obtain a Secret/Confidential clearance, and willingness to travel up to 75% of the year.

Required skills

• Operation of portable machining tools and hand tools.
• Use of precision measuring instruments such as calipers, verniers, height/depth gauges, layout tools, tachometers, thermometers and vibration indicators.
• Interpretation of blueprints, sketches and technical specifications.
• NAVSEA/SUBSAFE related certifications (e.g., NAVSEA Hatch Inspector, Deep Submergence Systems SOC MCD A/B/C, SUBSAFE qualification).
