About the role
The Outside Machinist III is a senior‑level tradesperson who independently performs all machinist duties on shipboard projects. The position involves extensive mechanical repair, alignment, testing, and mentorship of junior staff, with frequent overtime and travel.
Key responsibilities
- Perform all Outside Machinist duties without supervision, including setup, alignment, and operation of portable machining tools.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments such as calipers, verniers, gauges, tachometers, thermometers, and vibration indicators, recording all readings accurately.
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications to guide repair or installation work.
- Disassemble, repair, install, test, and inspect shipboard machinery including propulsion systems, pumps, ventilation equipment, steering gear, evaporators, torpedo tubes, and antenna mast mechanisms.
- Complete required documentation, inspections, and equipment testing in compliance with NAVSEA and company standards.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior craftsmen while collaborating with team members to maintain safe, efficient, high‑quality work practices.
Required profile
- Minimum six years of mechanical/machinist experience, senior‑level proficiency preferred.
- High School Diploma/GED with apprenticeship training, relevant vocational schooling, or equivalent military mechanical experience.
- U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain government base access and required security clearances.
- Willingness to travel up to 75 % of the year and work in outdoor, high‑humidity, noisy, and temperature‑extreme environments.
Required skills
- Operation of portable machining tools and hand tools.
- Use of precision measuring instruments (calipers, verniers, height/depth gauges, tachometers, thermometers, vibration indicators).
- Blueprint and technical drawing interpretation.
- Repair and overhaul of shipboard mechanical systems (propulsion, pumps, ventilation, steering gear, evaporators, torpedo tubes, antenna mast mechanisms).
- Compliance with NAVSEA standards and documentation procedures.
