Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Full‑Time at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

About the role

The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician 1 to provide comprehensive eye‑care testing and support clinical providers in Naples, FL. The role involves direct patient interaction, documentation in the EMR system, and participation in research activities.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and document visual acuity, intraocular pressure (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care), and visual field testing (Humphrey, VR).
• Conduct ocular motility, pupillary, and ocular surface assessments.
• Administer eye drops, manage contact lens insertion and removal, and assist with intravitreal injection preparation.
• Record patient histories, allergies, medications, and family/social/medical information in the EMR.
• Support providers by ensuring accurate chart documentation and equipment calibration.
• Participate in clinical research, maintain certifications, and travel to satellite eye centers as needed.

Required profile

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Minimum of 1 year of relevant ophthalmic or clinical experience.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience using tonometry devices (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care).
• Familiarity with Humphrey visual field analyzer and other perimetry equipment.
• Contact lens insertion and removal techniques.
• Competence with Microsoft Office applications.
