Medical Records Technician – Health Information Tech

About the role

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is hiring a Medical Records Technician 2 to support health information services at the Georgia Regional Hospital in Decatur. This full‑time position involves compiling, processing, and maintaining patient records in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Compile and maintain client medical records for documentation, research, and cost‑control purposes.
• Enter demographic, diagnostic, and treatment data into electronic systems.
• Identify, abstract, and code client data using standard classification systems.
• Develop and operate health record indexes and storage/retrieval systems.
• Process admission and discharge documents while protecting record confidentiality.
• Release information to authorized persons and agencies per regulations.
• Review records for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
• Transcribe medical reports.

Required profile

• High School diploma/GED and eligibility for certification as a medical records technician (AHIMA) or two years of medical records experience with independent coding.
• Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree or some college with at least six months of electronic medical records experience, or a high school diploma with twelve months of healthcare experience.
• Must pass state and national background checks.

Required skills

• Knowledge of medical coding systems for psychiatric and medical diagnoses.
• Familiarity with medical, psychiatric, and anatomical terminology.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records and office equipment.
