Medical Officer

About the role

The Medical Officer joins the Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) within the Office of Support Operations. Reporting to the Medical Director, the incumbent provides expert medical evaluation and medico‑legal advice for complex compensation claims and conducts clinical audits of UN medical facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent medical reviews of civilian and military compensation claims, including those referred to the Advisory Board on Compensation Claims (ABCC).
• Assess injury, illness and death to determine causality, severity, permanence and impairment according to UN standards.
• Prepare authoritative medical opinions on prognosis, service attribution and eligibility for compensation and insurance.
• Validate medical documentation from field missions, healthcare providers and Member States and draft reports to support administrative, legal and judicial decisions.
• Advise UN entities and governing bodies on medico‑legal matters related to compensation.
• Plan and execute clinical audits of UN medical facilities, evaluate compliance with clinical standards and patient‑safety requirements.
• Analyse audit findings, produce evidence‑based recommendations and monitor implementation.

Required profile

• Advanced medical degree with extensive experience in occupational health, medico‑legal evaluation or related fields.
• Proven expertise in reviewing complex compensation claims and delivering expert medical opinions.
• Strong understanding of UN medical standards, policies and compensation frameworks.
• Excellent analytical, report‑writing and communication skills.
