Materials AI/ML Specialist

About the role

3M is seeking a Materials AI/ML Specialist to accelerate new product development in formulation science. You will partner with product developers worldwide to modernize experiment planning, execution, and analysis using data‑driven AI and machine learning techniques.

Key responsibilities

• Apply AI/ML methods such as Bayesian optimization, cheminformatics, active learning, and AI hypothesis generation to guide experimental design for liquid adhesive and pressure‑sensitive adhesive formulations.
• Conduct hands‑on formulation, mechanical, and performance testing (e.g., overlap shear, DMA, handling strength) to generate high‑quality data.
• Analyze formulation, process, and performance data with statistical and machine‑learning approaches to extract actionable insights.
• Expand and apply emerging AI/ML capabilities, including generative AI and LLM‑assisted literature mining, to live product development challenges.
• Use and help evolve shared digital tools for experiment planning, data analysis, and knowledge capture.
• Communicate technical findings clearly to cross‑functional stakeholders and share learnings across programs.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• At least three years of experience in new product development, formulation, or experimental lab work.
• Two years of hands‑on experience using AI/ML or data‑science tools in experimental settings.
