Manager I, Environmental Protection – Groundwater Withdrawal Permitting

About the role

The Groundwater Withdrawal Permitting Unit of the State of Georgia seeks a Manager I to lead a team of geologists in overseeing municipal and industrial groundwater withdrawal permits. This role ensures compliance, supports water supply planning, and contributes to statewide water resource management.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise three staff geologists in reviewing permit applications and interacting with permittees and the public.
• Provide recommendations to the Director on issuance of groundwater withdrawal permits.
• Ensure permitted facilities remain in compliance with permit conditions.
• Organize and conduct annual water loss audits.
• Collaborate with the Water Supply Program manager during drought periods to report water‑supply status.
• Coordinate with Regional Water Planning Councils on statewide water planning initiatives.

Required profile

• Minimum five years of professional experience in water resources or environmental quality management.
• Proven success in conducting or leading resource assessments and using results for regulation or planning.
• Experience leading technical discussions on complex water‑resource issues.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including public outreach on technically complex projects.
• Demonstrated achievements in regulating industrial or municipal water development.
• Willingness to take on challenges and a strong sense of responsibility toward regulated communities and the public.
