Mammography Technologist, Special Procedures

About the role

Under general direction, the Mammography Technologist, Special Procedures performs screening mammograms as well as highly specialized diagnostic mammography tests and assists physicians during specialized breast procedures. The position is within Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, a large public‑sector health system serving more than 10 million residents.

Key responsibilities

• Assist physicians (radiologists, surgeons, and other specialists) in image‑guided diagnostic and invasive breast procedures such as stereotactic biopsy, MRI‑guided biopsy, needle localization, and galactograms.
• Perform screening and diagnostic mammography, including equipment setup, selection of appropriate grids, collimators, compression paddles, and contrast media.
• Operate mammographic and tomographic units, compute machine settings for patient size, implants, and tissue density, and ensure radiation safety using lead shields.
• Provide patient education, positioning, and comfort during procedures, and mentor new technologists and students.

Required profile

• At least one (1) year of experience as a certified Mammography Technologist.
• Certification as a Radiologic Technologist (CRT) and a California Mammographic Certificate, both current and unrestricted.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and a valid California Class C driver’s license.

Required skills

• Operation of mammographic and tomographic imaging equipment.
• Performance of image‑guided breast procedures (stereotactic, MRI‑guided biopsies, needle localization, galactograms).
• Application of radiation protection measures and use of lead shielding equipment.
