Local Investigations Fellow

About the role

The New York Times is launching a one‑year Local Investigations Fellowship for seasoned reporters who have a compelling local story idea. Fellows will work directly in the communities they cover, receiving mentorship from Dean Baquet and a team of veteran investigative editors while producing original investigative pieces for publication in the Times.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a signature investigative project focused on a specific state or region.
• Collaborate with senior editors for guidance, editorial feedback, and training.
• Travel periodically to The New York Times headquarters for workshops, editorial meetings, and support.
• Publish the investigative work through The New York Times platform.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of professional reporting experience at a local newspaper or digital news outlet.
• Independent journalist or newsroom employee willing to take a year‑long sabbatical.
• Strong commitment to journalistic independence and the Times’ mission to seek truth.

Required skills

• Proven ability to cover a beat and generate story ideas.
• Experience in investigative reporting techniques and research.
