Licensed Veterinary Technician

About the role

The Animal Recovery Center (ARC) at the 92nd Street ASPCA location cares for animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program, which are victims of cruelty and neglect. The Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) provides nursing care and works with medical, behavior and sheltering teams to give holistic care. The role is on-site, full-time, reporting to the Senior Director of Veterinary Services, with weekends, occasional flexibility and occasional overtime.

Key responsibilities

• Care for up to 40 cats and dogs per day using Fear Free/Low Stress handling, with skills such as venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology and dentistry.
• Administer injections, vaccinations, medications and treatments; perform venipuncture, run diagnostic tests and give fluids.
• Maintain medical supply inventory, logs, patient records and treatment sheets, and keep equipment functional.
• Support veterinarians in humane euthanasia and keep them informed of medical issues.
• Train and lead the direct care team, and share patient and behavior information with other ASPCA departments and incoming technicians.
• Clean and disinfect kennels, carriers and equipment, follow PPE and cleaning protocols, and keep the facility tidy.

Required profile

• Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment combining emergency and shelter medicine, with excellent low-stress animal handling.
• Team player who communicates courteously with all staff levels.
• Knowledge of veterinary medical concepts and infectious disease prevention.

• Target hiring pay of $34.60-$40.00 per hour, with a $2,000 signing bonus and a $2,000 retention bonus after one year.
