Legislative Assistant / Advocate (Hybrid, Sacramento)

About the role

The California Immigrant Policy Center seeks a Legislative Assistant/Legislative Advocate to support its legislative, budget, and administrative advocacy in Sacramento. This hybrid role combines in‑office work at the Capitol with remote tasks, requiring occasional evenings and weekends.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor assigned legislation, budget items, hearings, amendments and political developments related to CIPC’s priorities.
• Track bill language, committee deadlines, vote counts and author engagement for campaigns and issue areas.
• Draft and edit advocacy materials such as position letters, bill summaries, talking points, fact sheets and testimony.
• Support CIPC’s advocacy before the Legislature and state agencies by preparing materials, attending hearings and coordinating testimony.
• Maintain accurate tracking systems for bills, budget items, hearings and follow‑up tasks.

Required profile

• Minimum of 2 years experience in legislative advocacy, public policy, nonprofit or related field.
• Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights, racial, social and economic justice.
• Working knowledge of the California legislative and budget processes, or ability to quickly develop expertise.
• Strong writing, editing, research and oral communication skills.
• Excellent organizational ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
