Lab Support Technician II – Histology (PRN)

About the role

This PRN position supports the Histology Laboratory at UAMS for up to 8 hours per week. The technician receives immunohistochemistry orders, prepares and delivers slides, maintains equipment quality control, and helps keep the lab stocked and clean. Cross‑training in adjacent anatomical pathology labs is also expected.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, label, accession, and gross surgical, biopsy, and tissue specimens.
• Prepare tissue cassettes, operate tissue processors, embedder, microtome, and staining equipment.
• Perform paraffin embedding, cut sections, and prepare slides for routine and special histologic procedures.
• Maintain accurate records in the laboratory information system and ensure proper inventory of reagents, cassettes, and slides.
• Conduct quality checks on slides, blocks, and specimens, and report any discrepancies.
• Clean and maintain laboratory work areas and equipment following safety protocols.
• Handle hazardous chemicals (formalin, xylene) and specimens in compliance with OSHA, CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, and infection‑control policies.
• Assist histotechnologists, pathologists, and other staff with daily operations and special projects.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum two years of clinical laboratory experience.

Required skills

• Operation of tissue processing, embedding, and microtomy equipment.
• Slide preparation and histology staining techniques.
• Use of laboratory information systems for record keeping.
• Inventory management of histology supplies.
• Adherence to laboratory safety and regulatory standards.
