Junior Library Custodian - East Manhattan Network

About the role

The New York Public Library is seeking a Junior Library Custodian to keep its East Manhattan network of neighborhood libraries clean, safe and comfortable for users and staff. Working under the general supervision of the Cleaning Operations Coordinator, the custodian will be assigned to two sites and may also work at other locations as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and maintain the Library building and grounds
• Buff, strip and wax floors, shampoo carpets and replace light bulbs
• Handle snow removal
• Prepare maintenance reports and keep inventory of bathroom and cleaning supplies
• Safeguard the building during emergencies and escalate issues to the appropriate personnel
• Communicate regularly with the Library Manager about branch needs and travel between branches in the assigned network

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED and prior basic custodial or building superintendent work
• Successful demonstration of experience and knowledge of standard commercial building cleaning practices, materials and equipment
• Valid driver's license and clear driving record
• Ability to perform manual work including cleaning, heavy lifting, snow removal and working from high ladders, scaffolds and electrical lifts; heavy lifting may be required
• Must pass a pre-placement physical exam

Required skills

• Knowledge of material safety data sheets, safety practices and procedures
• Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated flexibility and reliability

Position details: 40 hours per week, non-exempt, unionized (Local 374); salary $44,904 per year.
