Histotechnician – Anatomical Pathology

About the role
The Histotechnician works in the Anatomical Pathology laboratory, receiving and accessioning surgical, biopsy, and autopsy specimens for routine tissue processing and microscopic examination. The role supports pathologists, pathologist assistants, and residents in the gross dissection room and performs special procedures such as special stains and undecalcified bone processing.
Key responsibilities
- Accession and process surgical, biopsy, and autopsy specimens, embedding tissues in paraffin and preparing slides for microscopic review.
- Perform special procedures including special stains, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy send‑outs, and undecalcified bone processing.
- Maintain and clean laboratory equipment such as microtomes, cryostats, automated slide stainers, and cover‑slippers, documenting quality control as required.
- Prepare and package specimens for external laboratories, handling documentation, transportation, and billing.
- Respond to pathologist, supervisor, and management requests within 24 hours and adjust workload schedules as needed.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent; preferred associate degree with at least 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
- Minimum 1 year experience in a histopathology laboratory or ASCP Histotechnician (HT) certification (certification may substitute for experience).
- Strong interpersonal skills for courteous interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, and laboratory staff.
- Ability to work independently, manage stress, and maintain a professional laboratory environment.
Required skills
- Operation of microtomes, cryostats, automated slide strainers, and cover‑slippers.
- Paraffin embedding, tissue sectioning, and slide staining techniques.
- Performance of special stains and undecalcified bone processing.
- Proficiency with Windows‑based computer applications, data entry, and laboratory information systems.
