Financial Counseling Specialist – Patient Services

About the role
The Financial Counseling Specialist works directly with patients who have scheduled clinical services to ensure financial clearance before the day of care. The role involves contacting payers and providers for authorizations, explaining hospital payment requirements, and guiding patients through alternative financing and charity care options.
Key responsibilities
- Meet with self‑pay and under‑insured patients to explain benefits, financial obligations, payment options, and assistance programs.
- Ensure a payment methodology is in place prior to discharge and collect payments before services are rendered.
- Screen scheduled non‑urgent surgical and diagnostic patients, collect deposits, and establish payment plans for large out‑of‑pocket obligations.
- Screen referred clinic patients, collect minimum payments, and verify financial coverage before visits.
- Assess eligibility for programs such as Social Security, COBRA, Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, and other assistance options.
- Obtain lifetime reserve letter signatures when required.
- Evaluate patients applying for the Financial Assistance Plan for additional program eligibility and process charity discount applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required profile
- High School diploma/GED with six years of healthcare revenue‑cycle experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in finance/business with two years of relevant experience.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively, and solve problems while multitasking.
- Excellent customer‑relations skills and the capacity to read, write, speak, and apply mathematical concepts.
Required skills
- Medical terminology (knowledge or competency within three months of hire).
- Proficiency with basic computer operations.
