Field Service Technician II – Carlsbad

About the role

The Field Service Technician II supports gas compression packages through maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning. Working primarily on-site in Carlsbad, the role blends hands‑on mechanical work with diagnostic and electrical expertise, preparing the technician for senior‑level responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on gas‑fired and electric‑driven compressor packages, including diagnostics, repairs, and engine tuning.
• Submit accurate daily field service and expense reports and maintain required paperwork.
• Provide basic leadership and training to new technicians and trainees.
• Diagnose engine and compressor failures, troubleshoot electrical systems, and service control panels such as Murphy and Altronic.
• Assist with installation, commissioning, and start‑up inspections of new units, often in adverse conditions.
• Travel on short notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and participate in on‑call rotation for emergency repairs.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; 5+ years of relevant field service experience.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship).
• Familiarity with Caterpillar Gas Engine Rating Pro (GERP) or similar OEM software.
• Certification preferred on CAT/Waukesha platforms (e.g., CAT Gas I, CAT Electrical, Waukesha VHP).

Required skills

• Troubleshooting of electrical systems and unit control panels.
• Engine/compressor diagnostics and performance tuning (CAT/Waukesha).
• Use of micrometers, pressure gauges, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
• Understanding of natural gas compressor package components, controls, and adjustments.
• Experience with GERP or equivalent OEM software.
