Experienced CNC Machinist – Night Shift

About the role

Collins Machine Works is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to work the night shift at its Portsmouth, VA facilities. The role involves setting up and operating manually‑controlled and CNC machines to fabricate, maintain, and repair precision metal parts.

Key responsibilities

• Set up, align, and operate equipment such as lathes, manual milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, and band saws.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CNC programs to produce parts within 0.001" tolerances.
• Perform daily cleaning, light maintenance, and routine inspections of machinery.
• Track jobs in JobBOSS and Travelers, and coordinate work with plant personnel.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED with 3–5 years of related machining experience.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to access DoD facilities (no visa sponsorship).
• Ability to lift up to 50 lb, stand for long periods, and use overhead cranes.
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Fanuc, Mazatrol, Okuma, and DMG/Mori CNC controls.
• Experience operating lathes, manual milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, and related cutting tools.
• Knowledge of G‑code, D‑code, T‑code programming and CNC job setup on vertical/horizontal machining centers.
• Familiarity with JobBOSS, Travelers, forklift, and crane operation.
