EU/UK Legal Counsel

About the role

Steve Madden is looking for an experienced, business‑oriented attorney licensed in one or more EU jurisdictions to join its Legal Department in New York. The role will serve as the primary legal advisor for the company’s European commercial activities and intellectual property matters across footwear, handbags, accessories, apparel, and licensed brands.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and manage a wide range of commercial agreements, including distribution, licensing, manufacturing, e‑commerce and marketing contracts.
• Conduct IP clearance reviews for product and branding concepts, focusing on European trademark and design rights.
• Oversee trademark, design, copyright and unfair competition disputes throughout Europe, coordinating outside counsel and developing litigation strategies.
• Provide regulatory advice on consumer‑product law, marketing practices, consumer protection and product‑related legal issues.
• Partner with internal teams on international product launches, licensing, brand collaborations and marketing initiatives.

Required profile

• Licensed attorney in at least one EU jurisdiction with a strong commercial law background.
• Demonstrated experience handling cross‑border commercial contracts and European IP matters.
• Ability to work closely with business units such as Sales, Design, Sourcing, Marketing and Brand Management.
• Strong analytical skills and a pragmatic approach to legal risk management.
