Economist – Payment Systems Research

About the role

The Economic Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is seeking a Ph.D. economist to conduct research on the macro‑financial dimensions of payment systems, including stablecoins, digital assets, and wholesale settlement.

Key responsibilities

• Provide policy advice to the Bank’s President, Board of Directors, and senior management on payment systems, banking, and monetary policy issues.
• Conduct and publish research on payment systems and related macro‑financial topics in top journals and present at conferences.
• Write articles for Bank publications such as the Economic Review and Payments System Research Briefings.
• Translate technical research for non‑academic audiences and present findings to banking and professional audiences.
• Mentor junior staff, review colleagues’ research, and contribute to department activities and policy discussions.

Required profile

• Doctorate in Economics or Finance with a focus on macro‑financial aspects of payment systems.
• Strong knowledge of economic theory, econometrics, and statistics comparable to top Ph.D. programs.
• Demonstrated potential to publish in leading journals and become a recognized field leader.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to convey technical research to policymakers.

What we offer

• Salary range: $132,200 – $217,300 per year.
