Economic Affairs Officer

About the role

The Economic Affairs Officer will work within the Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation Secretariat of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office, supporting the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Reporting to the Senior Economic Affairs Officer, the role involves technical analysis, policy development, and intergovernmental support on international tax matters.

Key responsibilities

• Develop databases and conduct technical analyses on topics such as digital business models, implementation of tax cooperation instruments, and tax dispute resolution.
• Draft inputs for technical papers, analytical studies, and treaty provisions related to international tax cooperation.
• Identify and analyse policy proposals, including digital services taxation, data‑protection requirements, and IT infrastructure needs.
• Attend and contribute to international, regional and national meetings, collecting information and facilitating discussions.
• Assist in organising expert group meetings, seminars and other events on tax cooperation issues.
• Prepare speeches and presentation inputs for senior staff.
• Support the planning and servicing of intergovernmental meetings, including hybrid and intersessional sessions.
• Prepare, finalise and disseminate pre‑ and post‑committee documentation and summary reports.
• Perform related administrative tasks and undertake on‑the‑job training.

Required profile

• Ability to apply economic theories and concepts to international tax cooperation.
• Proven capacity to conduct independent economic research and assess data validity and accuracy.
• Strong analytical skills for developing policy‑relevant analyses.
• Experience working under supervision in a multilateral or intergovernmental environment.
