Director of Accounting

About the role

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs is seeking a seasoned Director of Accounting to lead its financial operations. This senior position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and plays a critical role in ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance for the agency.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, month‑end close, and financial statement preparation.
• Ensure compliance with state accounting standards, reporting requirements, and audit procedures.
• Develop and implement internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard agency assets.
• Lead, mentor, and evaluate accounting managers and staff.
• Prepare and present financial analyses, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in public‑sector accounting or a large governmental organization.
• Proven track record of managing complex accounting teams and processes.
• Strong understanding of governmental accounting standards (e.g., GASB) and audit practices.
• Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
