Director, Federal Tax Planning

About the role

The Tax Director leads a team of tax professionals and acts as a strategic advisor to Tax leadership and business partners, supporting the Tax Department's goals. The role directs and oversees tax planning, research, audit defense, appeals, mergers and acquisitions, legislative advocacy, tax policy and other special projects, and builds trusted relationships across Tax, Finance, Legal, Accounting, Treasury, operations, external advisors and government authorities.

Key responsibilities

• Tax strategy, planning, controversy and risk management: lead direct tax planning, research, audit defense, appeals and complex federal tax M&A matters; monitor tax law and regulatory developments and recommend actions; develop and review technical tax positions, memoranda, models and audit defense strategies.
• Cross-functional leadership: act as a subject-matter expert and business partner on acquisitions, transformations and process improvements; partner with Finance, Legal, Accounting, Treasury, Operations and IT; translate complex tax issues into clear recommendations for senior leaders; define workstream scope, milestones and deliverables; liaise with subsidiary businesses and domestic or international teams.
• Talent leadership: attract, coach and mentor tax professionals, set expectations and performance standards, and build an inclusive, high-accountability culture.
• Operational excellence: establish processes, controls and governance, use data and analytics to improve efficiency and accuracy, manage budgets, outside advisors and project staffing, and drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Age 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States.
• Preferred: CPA, Master of Taxation or JD; 15+ years of experience.
• Experience in federal income tax, including Sub C, audit defense, mergers and acquisitions and U.S. tax implications of international operations.
• Technical tax skills, leadership, people management, communication with technical and non-technical audiences, and proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
