Custodian

About the role

A charter school in Jersey City is hiring a custodian for its multiple campuses. The position is full-time and on-site, with a salary of USD 18-20. The custodian keeps the school buildings clean and tidy and helps support the school's daily operations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform major cleaning tasks such as vacuuming (a 20 lb. vacuum daily for 3-4 hours), wet-mopping, sweeping, dusting, emptying the trash (lifting waste paper and debris of at least 55 lbs.), cleaning whiteboards and disinfecting drinking fountains.
• Clean restrooms, including floors and all fixtures (urinals, toilets, sinks, mirrors, partitions and counters), and make sure they are disinfected.
• Do ongoing tasks such as replacing light bulbs (climbing ladders up to 16 feet), filling dispensers and setting up facilities for students and adults (lifting furniture, boxes and cafeteria tables of at least 55 lbs.).
• Report major repairs promptly to the Head Custodian.
• Help with painting, repair work and setting up and breaking down for events.
• Assist the school security staff with coverage, arrival and dismissal procedures.
• Maintain the appearance of hallways by washing and buffing floors.

Required profile

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Able to pass a DOE criminal background check.
• Ability to lift 55 pounds to shoulder height occasionally.
• Teamwork and growth mindset, able to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be able to go up and downstairs and bend and stand as needed during a daily shift.

Required skills

• Basic computer literacy: sending and receiving emails and using a ticket system for work orders.
• Nice to have: basic plumbing and carpentry knowledge, ability to paint, floor care experience, occasional weekend and evening work, experience in school settings, and fluency in Spanish.
