Cross Country Coach (Grades 5-8)

About the role

The Buffalo Board of Education is seeking a dedicated Cross Country Coach for grades 5‑8 at PS 156 Frederick Law Olmsted. The coach will develop student‑athletes, teach race strategies, and foster a positive athletic environment.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, conduct, and supervise cross country practices and competitions for middle‑school teams.
• Adhere to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics and model nondiscriminatory practices.
• Manage equipment, uniforms, and supplies, including inventory, cleaning, and storage.
• Submit equipment and supply requests to the Athletic Director.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with administrators, parents, and students.
• Attend athletic department meetings and be available for contests, practices, and occasional holidays.

Required profile

• Experience coaching organized cross country at club, junior varsity, varsity, or collegiate level is preferred.
• Effective coaching techniques and knowledge of cross country rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques.
• Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators, parents, and students.
• Must hold a valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification prior to coaching.
• Either a valid physical‑education teaching certificate or completion of a New York State Coaching Certification pathway.

Required skills

• First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
• New York State Coaching Certification (or completion of the Erie 1 BOCES or NFHS pathway).
• Knowledge of cross country rules, strategies, and training methods.
