Counselor Advocate – Day Shift

About the role

The Counselor Advocate works the day shift (8 am‑4 pm) providing emergency shelter, hotline, and case‑management services to victims of domestic violence and women at risk of homelessness in Carbon and Luzerne Counties. The position is full‑time, non‑exempt and includes on‑call and weekend coverage as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver crisis intervention, intake, safety planning, and referrals through the shelter and hotline, ensuring clients receive emergency shelter and transportation when required.
• Facilitate house meetings, support groups, and daily housekeeping checks to maintain a safe, rule‑compliant residential environment.
• Conduct in‑person intake interviews, verify references, and orient new residents to house policies and community resources.
• Provide advocacy, case management, and follow‑up services, including assistance with victim compensation claims and coordination with police referrals.
• Document all client interactions, maintain referral lists, and participate in case conferences and program planning.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent with demonstrated experience in domestic‑violence, social services, or related fields.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, manage crisis situations, and exercise sound judgment.
• Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills, with a commitment to client self‑determination.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Basic competence with standard office equipment such as printers and fax machines.
