California Policy Associate – Advocacy & Legislative Relations

About the role
California Trout is seeking a motivated Policy Associate to support its state‑wide advocacy and conservation agenda. Reporting to the Director of Policy, the associate will help advance healthy rivers, fish, and climate‑resilient ecosystems across California through legislative, regulatory, and stakeholder engagement work.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor and analyze California legislation, budget proposals, and agency actions; prepare briefing memos, position letters, fact sheets, and regulatory comments.
- Attend legislative hearings, testify on behalf of CalTrout, and maintain regular contact with legislative and agency staff.
- Support the development and drafting of CalTrout‑sponsored legislation and advocate for funding priorities in the state budget process.
- Build and maintain relationships with tribal nations, conservation partners, water users, agricultural interests, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate with regional program staff to identify policy barriers and translate on‑the‑ground restoration lessons into statewide policy solutions.
- Maintain organized policy files, trackers, calendars, and assist with communications such as policy blogs and social‑media copy.
- Travel throughout California to visit project sites and assist with office logistics and lobbying report preparation.
Required profile
- 1–3 years of professional experience in policy, advocacy, or related fields, including paid, volunteer, or lived‑experience pathways.
- Strong written communication skills, proactive relationship‑building ability, and genuine passion for California natural resources and conservation.
- Valid California driver’s license and willingness to travel; based in Sacramento for regular in‑person work.
