About the role
The Texas Division of Emergency Management is seeking a bilingual Media and Communications Officer to lead the agency’s public information strategy. This full‑time, on‑site position will support disaster response efforts by creating and disseminating clear, multilingual messages to the public and media.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement a cohesive communications strategy in coordination with senior leadership.
- Serve as the agency’s press officer: respond to media inquiries, arrange interviews, and conduct on‑camera briefings.
- Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, speeches, and other public‑facing content in both English and Spanish.
- Provide pre‑emptive planning and crisis communications during emergencies.
- Conduct multicultural outreach before, during, and after disasters across the state.
- Liaise with state emergency management councils and operate the joint information center.
- Manage the media and communications budget and ensure quality control of all released information.
Required profile
- U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in Texas.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as emergencies demand.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
- Demonstrated judgment, initiative, and creativity in fast‑paced environments.
Required skills
- Professional proficiency in translating written and spoken content between English and Spanish.
- Experience with media relations, press release writing, and on‑camera interviewing.
- Knowledge of crisis communication and public information best practices.
