Behavioral Health Counselor (Level 2)

About the role

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is seeking a Behavioral Health Counselor (Level 2) to provide individual and group counseling for adults with severe mental illness and co‑occurring substance use disorders at the Forensic Mental Health Treatment Mall, located in Decatur, GA.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver individual and group counseling sessions to help clients develop coping strategies, recover from illness, and transition safely from a psychiatric hospital to community living.
• Conduct substance‑use assessments using clinical interviews and evidence‑based tools.
• Maintain confidential treatment records and prepare required reports.
• Monitor client progress against measurable goals outlined in treatment and care plans.
• Collaborate with court supervisors and multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with court‑ordered treatment requirements.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or higher in clinical or counseling psychology or a closely related field.
• Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor – CADC I (or equivalent).
• Experience working with individuals who have severe and persistent mental health issues and/or developmental disabilities.
• Ability to pass state and national background checks as required by law.
