Auditor/Examiner I – Georgia Department of Revenue

About the role

The Georgia Department of Revenue is seeking an Auditor/Examiner I to analyze accounting records and ensure compliance with state tax laws. This full‑time position offers the chance to serve the public while developing a career in government finance.

Key responsibilities

• Examine and analyze accounting records to assess financial condition and tax compliance.
• Interact with taxpayers, representatives, banking institutions, and court offices via mail, phone, and in‑person meetings.
• Prepare financial reports on operating procedures and audit findings.
• Collaborate with supervisors on audits that may involve litigation and provide depositions for hearings.
• Utilize the Discovery functionality of ITS and follow leads assigned by supervisors.
• Contact taxpayers, schedule audits within 60 days, and provide pre‑audit materials.
• Secure and maintain statutory waivers, escalating issues when necessary.
• Prepare timely work papers and assessment documentation to support audit completion.
• Document important conversations and interactions in writing.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a closely related field, or three years of relevant professional experience.
• Detail‑oriented with strong customer‑service focus.
• Demonstrated accountability, sound judgment, teamwork, and results orientation.
• Ability to multitask, travel in‑state as required, and lift/carry up to 30 lb.
• Willingness to handle approximately 30 % phone work, including inbound calls and taxpayer correspondence.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
