Attorney 3 – Public Defender (Macon Area)

About the role

The State of Georgia is seeking an experienced criminal defense attorney to join the Alternate Public Defender Middle Georgia Regional Office as an Attorney 3. This full‑time position serves indigent clients in the Macon area, handling serious felony matters in Superior Court.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate case facts, develop defense strategies, and prepare for trial.
• Negotiate plea agreements, conduct plea proceedings, and enter pleas in felony cases.
• Draft and file motions, pleadings, and other legal documents.
• Maintain regular communication with clients, courts, and other stakeholders.
• Represent clients zealously in hearings, trials, and appellate matters.

Required profile

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution and a license to practice law in Georgia.
• Minimum three years of criminal defense experience.
• Current good standing membership in the State Bar of Georgia.
• Willingness to travel throughout the Macon area.
• Strong advocacy skills, sound legal judgment, and a commitment to public defense.

Required skills

• Proficiency in legal research and case documentation.
• Knowledge of Georgia statutes, federal and state criminal law, and court procedures.
• Ability to draft persuasive motions and pleadings.
