Associate Director of Government Relations

About the role

The Associate Director of Government Relations will support Calbright College’s government relations team, helping to shape and execute state advocacy strategies that advance the college’s mission. Reporting to the Vice President of Government Relations, the role combines strategic policy leadership with direct legislative advocacy across California.

Key responsibilities

• Manage development, execution and evaluation of Calbright’s state advocacy strategy, including legislative priorities and budget advocacy.
• Monitor, analyze and report on state legislative, regulatory and budget proposals affecting higher education and workforce development.
• Draft proposals for sponsored legislation and recommend amendments to pending bills.
• Maintain a comprehensive legislative tracking and stakeholder mapping system to inform institutional strategy.
• Collaborate with Communications and Marketing teams on opinion editorials, podcasts, media appearances and panel opportunities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of professional experience in government relations, legislative affairs or public policy in California.
• Proven experience lobbying elected officials and government agencies, with a track record of developing and executing legislative advocacy strategies.
• Experience working on higher‑education and workforce‑development policy issues such as competency‑based education and credit for prior learning.

Required skills

• Proficiency with G Suite.
• Experience using Slack.
• Familiarity with video‑conferencing tools.
• Use of Asana for project management.
