AR Glass Substrate Expert – Glass Melting & High Index Glass Process Development

About the role

We are looking for a seasoned materials and process expert to lead the development of advanced glass substrates for AR/MR waveguides, combining deep knowledge of glass melting, high‑refractive‑index glass formulation, and precision thickness control to scale from R&D to high‑volume manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Research and develop high‑index optical glass compositions optimized for AR applications.
• Design and implement thickness and flatness control strategies, including TTV, wedge, and transmitted wavefront metrology.
• Scale lab‑scale processes to 300 mm wafer platforms and high‑volume production, collaborating with glass and equipment vendors.
• Partner with optics, photonics, and hardware teams to integrate substrates into AR waveguide designs and co‑optimize materials and processes.
• Contribute to patents, internal documentation, and define next‑generation substrate roadmaps.

Required profile

• MS or PhD in Materials Science, Glass Science, Applied Physics, or related field.
• Proven expertise in glass melting and forming technologies with hands‑on experience in high‑index glass development.
• Familiarity with NIL vs. etched grating processes and AR waveguide integration.

Required skills

• Refractive index engineering and optical performance metrics.
• Metrology for thickness, flatness, and transmitted wavefront.
• Process scaling from prototype to mass production.
• CMP/polishing, coatings, and surface quality optimization.
