Application Engineer – Technical Support & Development

About the role

3M is seeking an Application Engineer to join its abrasive solutions team in Maplewood, MN. You will work closely with global product development teams and customers to drive innovative applications, troubleshoot processes, and support the adoption of new abrasive technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Lead application development activities, including ideation, documentation, feasibility analysis, and validation.
• Troubleshoot and optimize abrasive processes at customer sites.
• Provide technical insights to product development teams for new solution creation.
• Deliver application support and training to customers, sales representatives, and distributors through on‑site visits and e‑media.
• Develop and implement new methods to evaluate abrasive solution performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) with at least 2 years of technical support experience, or a high school diploma/GED with at least 6 years of relevant experience.
• Equivalent expertise to a degree in Engineering or Materials Science.
• Minimum 5 years of industrial technical, sales, or customer‑facing experience.
• Experience in new product development and scale‑up validation.
• Strong ability to document technical work and present results.
• Hands‑on construction or fabrication experience, especially with industrial abrasives.
