Actuarial Data Analyst

About the role

Shepherd is looking for a detail‑oriented Actuarial Data Analyst to support multiple commercial P&C lines, including General Liability, Workers' Compensation, Commercial Property and Excess Casualty. You will bridge market intelligence, regulatory requirements and data‑driven product decisions while working closely with actuaries, underwriters and engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing, pricing and filing rating plans with state Departments of Insurance.
• Conduct competitor analysis of rate and form filings using SERFF, S&P Capital IQ Pro and other regulatory databases.
• Perform loss‑ratio analysis by line, territory and risk characteristics to identify profitable segments.
• Write SQL queries against internal PostgreSQL databases to extract premium, loss and exposure data.
• Create interactive BI dashboards in Metabase and support data transformation with dbt.

Required profile

• 2‑5 years of experience in commercial P&C insurance product analysis, actuarial or competitive analysis.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance or a related analytical field.
• Actuarial exams (P, FM, MAS‑I, MAS‑II, 5) preferred but not required.

Required skills

• Advanced SQL proficiency for PostgreSQL data extraction and manipulation.
• Experience with Metabase (or similar BI tools) and dbt for analytics pipelines.
• Strong spreadsheet modeling skills (Excel) and familiarity with SERFF filing system.
• Python for advanced analytics (preferred).
