Tax Manager

About the role

The Tax Manager will serve as the primary resource for tax compliance reporting and advisory across Cornell University. Reporting to the Assistant Tax Director, this role supports faculty, staff, and students on a wide range of federal, state, local, and international tax matters while ensuring timely filing of all required returns.

Key responsibilities

• Provide management, guidance, and oversight to tax team members and payroll staff on tax issues.
• Research, monitor, and interpret current and proposed tax legislation, regulations, and court cases affecting higher‑education institutions.
• Review university activities, ancillary services, and potential unrelated business activities for tax compliance.
• Advise faculty, staff, and students on tax consequences of activities such as unrelated business income tax, non‑resident alien tax, sales tax, and payroll tax.
• Manage foreign tax reporting responsibilities for university activities outside the United States.
• Evaluate contracts, transactions, and accounting entries for tax considerations and budgetary impact.
• Ensure timely preparation, payment, and filing of all applicable global tax returns for the university and its affiliates.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in tax compliance and advisory within a complex organization, preferably in higher education.
• Strong understanding of federal, state, local, and international tax regulations.
• Ability to lead and mentor a tax team and collaborate with payroll staff.
• Excellent analytical and risk‑assessment skills.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of tax legislation, regulations, and court rulings.
• Experience with unrelated business income tax, non‑resident alien tax, sales tax, and payroll tax.
• Proficiency in reviewing contracts, accounting systems, and financial transactions for tax implications.
