Staff+ Software Engineer, Safeguards ML Infrastructure

About the role

The Safeguards ML Infra team builds and operates the production infrastructure that powers Claude's safety systems. As a Staff+ Software Engineer you will design, implement, and run critical backend services that ensure safe token generation across multiple deployment platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and deploy backend services that safeguard the token sampling and generation path.
• Own and operate production serving infrastructure on internal platforms, AWS Bedrock, and GCP Vertex.
• Define and maintain Service Level Objectives (SLOs), create observability and alerting systems, and lead incident response.
• Participate in on‑call rotations covering service incidents, model provisioning, and time‑sensitive safety launches.
• Automate repetitive tasks, build tooling, and develop self‑serve workflows to reduce on‑call toil.
• Maintain a safety registry tracking deployments, models, and provenance.
• Implement automated post‑deployment validation across platforms.
• Collaborate with ML researchers to productionize new safety techniques.

Required profile

• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating high‑QPS, distributed backend systems at scale.
• Proven track record of ownership over production environments and incident response.
• Comfortable working in a fast‑moving AI safety context and learning ML concepts on the job.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python (Rust experience is a plus).
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems and high‑throughput services.
• Experience with production infrastructure, SLO definition, observability, and alerting.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS (Bedrock) and GCP (Vertex).
• Automation, tooling, and self‑service workflow development.
