Software Engineer, Payments Infrastructure

About the role

The Payments Infrastructure team builds the secure bridge between live customer conversations and Sierra’s backend, handling sensitive payment data without exposing plaintext to agents. You will design protocols, tokenization, and security controls that enable seamless, compliant payments across voice, chat, and telephony channels.

Key responsibilities

• Design a secure‑capture protocol that presents a single continuous payment event to agents across diverse channels.
• Build and extend a tokenization platform with per‑token envelope encryption and unique data keys.
• Own the security perimeter of the cardholder‑data environment, enforcing access through infrastructure controls.
• Develop deterministic, auditable detection in the agent hot‑path to prevent plaintext exposure to LLMs.
• Enable other engineers to add payment capabilities without deep compliance expertise, driving processor‑agnostic, self‑serve onboarding.
• Set technical direction for the team, creating reusable abstractions that scale across customers.

Required profile

• 7+ years building backend, platform, or infrastructure systems with high‑reliability production experience.
• Deep security instinct, designing for compromise, blast radius, and least‑privilege.
• Fluency in Go and experience owning critical distributed systems end‑to‑end.
• Proven ability to set technical direction on ambiguous, high‑stakes problems.
• Generalist mindset that creates clean abstractions over messy external systems.
• Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
